Mentally healthy people are not perfect. In fact, the Bible says that “we are all sinners.” But mentally healthy people have come to terms with their past, they live in the present, and they hope for the future. The Bible has referenced mental health a lot. For example, Philippians 4:6-7 tells us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (ESV) These verses remind us that we can talk to God about our anxiety and He will give us peace.

Jesus and mental health
Jesus was a loving and compassionate teacher who had great empathy for people. He often spoke of the importance of caring for our mental health, saying “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Jesus also spoke about compassion and understanding for those who are struggling with mental health issues, saying “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled”.
The Bible and mental health
There are numerous references to mental illness in the Bible. The most common mental health issues mentioned include depression, anxiety, paranoia and suicidal thoughts. For example, Job was said to have been depressed (Job 3:25) while David experienced severe anxiety (Psalm 6:3). Furthermore, King Saul is said to have suffered from paranoia (1 Samuel 18:10-12) and Judas Iscariot contemplated suicide (Matthew 27:5). These passages offer evidence that mental health issues were very real for many people in Biblical times. Ultimately, they remind us that we are not alone in our struggles with mental health issues. We can take comfort knowing that God understands our suffering and cares deeply for us.
Depression
Depression is one of the most common mental health issues mentioned in the Bible. The book of Psalms often speaks of depression and despair but also offers hope for those who are suffering. Many passages remind us that God holds us, comforts us, and loves us through our darkest times (Psalm 34:18; Psalm 71:20-21). Additionally, other scriptures encourage us to be honest about our struggles and to trust in God’s goodness (1 Peter 5:7). These verses offer a powerful reminder that we can find solace in God’s love during difficult times.
Anxiety
The Bible offers comfort and hope to those who struggle with anxiety. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded that prayer can bring peace and understanding in times of distress. Additionally, 1 Peter 5:7 encourages us to cast our anxieties upon God because He cares for us. These verses provide an important reminder that God is always with us and will never forsake us in our time of need.
